Friends of the Squirrel Hill Library
The Friends of the Squirrel Hill Library raise money to supplement the library's budget.
Our primary means of raising money is the sale of used books,
most of them donated by our patrons.
You can bring donations to the library whenever it is open
(M-Th 10 to 8, F-Sat 10 to 5, Sun 1 to 5)
and get a receipt to take a charitable deduction on your federal income tax.

There is an ongoing sale area in the library
with a sampling of books, tapes, and disks of all types.
Prices range from 50 cents to $2, with some special items priced higher.
ongoing book sale

2013-14: EVERYTHING BELOW THIS BOX IS NO LONGER TRUE.

THE ONGOING BOOK SALE HAS BEEN GREATLY ENLARGED AND NAMED "THE FRIENDSHOP".

ALL THE MAJOR PERIODIC BOOK SALES HAVE BEEN DISCONTINUED.

THE FRIENDS WORK ROOM IS NOW USED TO PROCESS AND STORE
BOOKS THAT ARE BEING SOLD ONLINE AT AMAZON.COM.

All donations are checked against the books on Amazon and if they could
be sold for $20 or more, they are placed in our "online book store" at www.amazon.com/shops/sqhill.
If they are being sold online for $5 to $19.99, we put them in the FriendShop at $5.00.

We also have a "Free Box" downstairs at the Forbes Avenue entrance, where we give away damaged and outdated materials.
PLEASE do not leave donations there, since we will never see them/sort them/make money from them for the library.
(You may leave encyclopedias with the Free Box items, since we never manage to sell encyclopedias no matter how cheap we make them. You might as well bypass us and give them away directly.)

In July, we participate in the Squirrel Hill Sidewalk Sale with a 4-day sale of all of our fiction, children's books, audio/visual items, and foreign language books. The last day is a Bag Sale. This year, the bag sale will include all the adult fiction. We give you a brown grocery bag; you fill it with whatever you want and pay a flat $4.

If you wish to post this flyer at work, at school, etc., you can print a copy from a Word or .pdf file.
(Use your browser's "back" button to return here.)
Copies are also available at the Squirrel Hill Library, on the table near the copy machine across from the Service Desk.
upcoming book sale
We hold two giant sales each year at which we offer all the books in stock -- "Spring Cleanup" at the end of April and "Fall Clearance" at the end of October.
Because we try to start fresh with all new books after the October clearance sale, it culminates in a Bag Sale at which we hand out brown paper grocery bags which you fill with whatever you want for $4/$2.
We invite nonprofit organizations to come for Free Bags during the sale; if you know of any schools, civic groups, charities, etc. that could use books, please contact us at friends@pittsburghusedbooks.com.

In November, we have another very large sale, featuring like-new and special books suitable for holiday giving.
Those books are usually left out for sale until early in January.
Prices range from $1 to $3, with a few priced higher.

During the rest of the year we have 2- or 3-day "mini sales" featuring a few categories of books each time:

The July sale is featured above.

In September, the mini sale features religious and philosophic works
along with Judaica (books on Jewish culture and history).

In February, we celebrate Black History Month, featuring books on black culture, arts, and history --
along with more general history and biographies.

We may hold other mini sales when some categories start overflowing our storage shelves.
The "mini" will usually be held on the third weekend of the month.
Watch for posters and outdoor signs.

You can print bookmarks that list all of the sales for this year.
